The approach is fitting a modified and extended Bayesian version of the IFM for dynamic landscapes ( Verheyen et al. 2004 ) using snapshot data on a set of epiphytic lichens. Levins' metapopulation model was the first model of population dynamics for the study of population processes in a heterogeneous environment (Fahrig, 2007; Levins, 1969). A toxicant‐dosed metapopulation model was used to explore the range of possible dynamics of populations in contaminated field sites.

Classical metapopulation dynamics In this section we seek to \scale up" from the two-patch model de-veloped in the preceding section to consider the dynamics of a pop-ulation on an arbitrary number of patches. Unfortunately, it is not feasible to simply add more equations to the existing system of two equations. Some simple calculations show why.

Metapopulation dynamics

Each local habitat in a metapopulation is referred as subpopulations. A metapopulation consists of a group of spatially separated populations of the same species which interact at some level. The term metapopulation was coined by Richard Levins in 1969 to describe a model of population dynamics of insect pests in agricultural fields, but the idea has been most broadly applied to species in naturally or artificially fragmented habitats.

This way of conceptualizing population dynamics is known as metapopulation dynamics. The key concept here is that different populations within the metapopulation are connected by dispersal but are undergoing different dynamics, but are connected by dispersal.

In addition, within a metapopulation, the creation or restoration of additional, discrete sites may buffer the whole population against the effects of localised events or demographic stochasticity (Hanski & Gyllenberg, 1993). Within a metapopulation, there may be both source populations and sink populations (Pulliam, 1988).
